The Environment and You

Petroleum and Pesticides: two things that make the things we use daily awful for the environment and we don't even know it. Verde will show you how to eliminate these wretched things and other ways to be eco-friendly.

Petroleum - pe.tro.le.um [puh-troh-lee-uh m]
-noun

An oily, thick, flammable, usually dark-colored liquid that is a form of bitumen or a mixture of various hydrocarbons, occurring naturally in various parts of the world and commonly obtained by drilling: used in a natural or refined state as fuel, or separated by distillation into gasoline, naphtha, benzene, kerosene, paraffin, etc.

pesticide - pes.ti.cide [pes-tuh-sahyd]
-noun

A chemical used to kill harmful animals or plants. Pesticides are used especially in agriculture and around areas where humans live. Some are harmful to humans, either from direct contact or as residue on food, or are harmful to the environment because of their high toxicity, such as DDT (which is now banned in many countries). Pesticides include fungicides, herbicides, insecticides, and rodenticides.

There are many things you can do to help think green during the night, and help save you money! Here are some tips:

Faucet
  • Set your thermostat lower and add an extra blanket to your bed at night.
  • Unplug appliances. (Appliances that are plugged in, but not on, are still using energy. Not many people know that!)
  • Pump your gas. (If you pump it at night, there is less evaporation because it's cooler.)
  • Check your fridge temperature. (You may be keeping it too cool, using energy you don't need to be using!)
  • Water your lawn. (If you water it at night there is less of a chance that the water will evaporate before it is soaked by your lawn.)
  • Tighten your faucets around the house. (You will save gallons of water you didn't even know you were using!)
  • Turn off your lights!
